Designed as a speculative 2-unit development, the Haskell Condos are located in a single-family lot in East Austin. The design takes the site and the trees into consideration, and articulates the division of the lot into 2 units through private courtyards. Both units incorporate interaction between outdoor indoor spaces, which is reflected through the outside of the building with screening of private courtyards and balconies.
The architecture incorporates green building, low-maintenance materials and landscaping, energy-efficient windows and HVAC systems. The main house consists of 2000 sf and secondary apartment consists of 1000 sf. Both units contain areas that can be converted into outdoor or indoor spaces at the will of the inhabitant, offering flexibility of use in a cold winter day or summer outdoor barbecue event. Such convertible spaces also offer the inhabitant the ability to save energy at will; as the areas are converted into outdoor spaces, the enclosed, air-conditioned space is smaller, requiring less energy to cool & heat the air.
The Haskell Street Condominiums are breaking ground in August 2007. NOTE: Currently, the main house is available for sale, and the secondary apartment has already been sold.
